We left Colorado with our friends Cookie and Frank after John installed hardwood floors, like ours, in their rig. We traveled to Salida and stayed at a BLM site right along the river. We met Jeanne and Chris there and we all went to Amica’s Pizza for dinner, which was as good as the last time we were there.
The next morning we headed out and traveled to Elk Creek Trailhead. It wasn’t our first choice but all the NFS campgrounds were closed for the winter. We drove up a dirt road to this big grassy area with several groupings of hunters. We were able to find a level spot for Cookie/Frank and John and I. It poured all night so we decided it would be best to leave in the morning so we didn’t get stuck in the mud.
We drove to Chama and walked around and then headed to a NFS campground we read about but ran into horrible rain, thunder and lightning. We made the decision to pick up the mats we had ordered from Otra Vuelta in Los Ojos and then head to Lake Abiquiu a couple days early.
Next, Abiquiu Lake.
